Guide rings are used to guide metal parts in relative motion and prevent them from making contact, and can be produced in different materials.

The most common materials used include acetal resin with fibreglass, PTFE with various fillers added, cotton fabric impregnated with phenol resin, and composite polyester reinforced with synthetic fibres and PTFE added.

Correctly installed guide rings also contribute to improving the functionality of piston and shaft seals, by dampening any vibrations and exerting a slight scraping and smoothing action on seal surfaces.

In addition to guide rings, there are guide strips in PTFE with different fillers added such as bronze, carbon graphite, chrome, polyester reinforced with synthetic fibres and PTFE added, and case-hardened PTFE strips that are suitably treated for adhesion on metal and are widely used in the machine tool industry.
