Spherical Roller Bearings

Spherical roller bearings have two rows of rollers that roll into one spherical shaped track situated in the external ring. The corresponding two tracks for the internal ring are tilted with respect to the bearing axis. These bearings are adjustable and make it possible to handle, within certain limits, any misalignment of the shaft with respect to the housing. This phenomenon can transpire due to alignment defects in the assembly phase, or due to the shaft bending in response to the force of applied loads.

The presence of relatively long symmetric rollers with a large diameter gives this type of bearing higher radial load capacity, and makes them extremely suitable in applications that operate under considerable amounts of load. The internal geometry of the bearing also allows it to withstand moderate amounts of axial thrust in both directions.

It must be noted however that the maximum permitted speed decreases with an increase in axial load, and the use of these bearings is not usually recommended in the case of purely axial loads.
