Tapered roller bearings are especially designed to withstand combined loads (radial-axial). They can be dismantled given that they are formed with an inner ring complete with cage and rollers (cone), and an external ring (cup).

Single row roller bearings can withstand direct axial loads in one direction only. An axial component is generated in the bearing as a result of a radial load, which must be balanced with a direct force in the opposite direction. For this reason the bearing is usually fitted opposing another.

Tapered roller bearings are designed to obtain a modified line of contact between the rollers and the tracks, to prevent the damaging effects of concentrated pressure at the edges. This feature, and the use of a high number of rollers of significant length, enable the bearing to have considerable load capacity. They are available with one, paired, two and four rows of rollers.
