What are cookies?

Cookies are short strings of text that a website may send to the user's device when browsing (whether it is a PC, notebook, smartphone or tablet, they are usually stored directly in the browser). The same website that sent them may subsequently read and log the cookies on the device, to obtain various types of information.

How many types of cookies exist?

There are two fundamental macro categories with different characteristics:

technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical cookies are generally necessary for correct website operation and to enable browsing. Without them, the user may not be able to view pages correctly or use services. For example, a technical cookie is essential for keeping users connected when visiting a site, or for storing language and display settings etc. Technical cookies can be further split into browser cookies, which guarantee normal browsing and use of the website (e.g. enabling shopping or authentication to access reserved areas); analytical cookies, combined with technical cookies only where used to gather aggregated information on the number of users and how they visit the website; functionality cookies, which enable users to browse in relation to a set of criteria selected (e.g. language, products selected to purchase) in order to improve service levels.

Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are generally used to send adverts according to preferences expressed during a browsing session.

Cookies can then be classed as:

session cookies, which are deleted immediately after closing the browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari, Google Chrome etc.)

persistent cookies, which remain in the browser for a certain period of time, unlike session cookies. They are used, for example, to recognise the device connected to the site, facilitating user authentication operations.

first-party cookies i.e. cookies generated and managed directly by the website operator of the site the user is browsing

third-party cookies, which are generated and managed by parties other than the website operator of the site the user is browsing (through a contract between the website owner and the third party).
